What’s on, Friday

The Royal Standard Hotel: Possibly the best session we have had to date. And that is from October 2016 if anyone is interested. Susy sang better and better, the Captain insisted on playing Bernie’s Tune, and Neil (guitar) seemed to enjoy having a solid rhythm section. Not a huge turnout but an appreciative crowd.

Donna and Steve Bray are featured this week, with Ivan, meself and the Captain dodging the brickbats. All rehearsals have been error free so far, so I am looking forward to seeing how it all turns out.

The Royal Standard Hotel: Susy V is back

As promised, Susy V is back for another session, this time with Dave Taylor,(bass), Alan Richards (drums), meself (piano) the Captain (Belgian nose floot) , and Neil (guitar) soloing.

What’s on, Friday: The Royal Standard Hotel

The Royal Standard Hotel: Susie cracked it, Ann Hayres this week..

Susie cracked it indeed, at very short notice. And if the truth be told, a little light on for preparedness due to not much singing for the past 18 months. What ensued Susie having fun and a pretty good night, well received by the regulars. We must do it again.

This week sees Ann Hayres stepping up to the plate – with an eclectic selection of esoteric jazz standards: the irrepressible Dave Taylor back on double bass, the Captain on sax and a Allan Smith on drums. The night could turn out a debacle, but with those musos on board, at least it will be a stylish debacle. Or a lot of fun. Or both

Improvisation, why bother. Just make it up as you go along…

The Royal Standard Hotel: Fridays sorted

The Divine Miss Smith and the polytonal Jason Chalmers did not disappoint. This week, Susie returns to the fray, after a protracted break, and the usual crew will be there in support.

Stick to the black notes, they’re cheaper…

Meanwhile, back at the Royal Standard Hotel…

Miss Joys will be singing this Friday, with Kip Dale on bass, Michelle Morrison on drums and meself on drugs. As we haven’t played together for quite a while (Ms Njambi keeps jetting off for lush gigs in Bali or something) , this should prove an interesting evening, as a pre cursor to the Festival.

Toodlepip!

What’s On: Friday Night Live at the Royal Standard Hotel

The Royal Standard Hotel: Annie Smith

Singing this Friday at the Royal Standard Hotel, quite possibly starting at 7.00pm, and with all her charts organised. If you wish to see this rare phenomenon, do drop in. Luis (saxophone) will be playing the entire night in Spanish, Eija will be keeping us in order on bass, Bill Swannie will be playing some ace bossa, and I will be silly as a wheel at the keys. The Royal Standard Hotel: Joys Njambi…

Singing this Friday at the Royal Standard Hotel.
Last week, Nadira absolutely wore us (Dave Taylor, Greg Appleton, “Twang” Stewart and meself) out, flying around the playlist like a lunatic, but, hell, it was fun.

This Friday, Joys Njambi is back, with another set of old and new toons: probably the most experienced of the singers to have done the RSH thing, and a lot of fun… if she remembers her microphone. And a lot of fun if she doesn’t…singing anything from Bessie Smith to George Michael.

Kip Dale (bass), Michelle Morrison (drums), meself and Captain Sensible (saxophone) will be making up the orchestra.

Friday Night Live with the songstress from the Ho
Nadira Farid (Hobart) is coming to town for this Friday’s session, supported by David Taylor (bass), Greg Appleton (drums), myself (piano), and Ben Stewart on guitar.

Expect an evening of swing tunes done with Nadira’s trademark panache – quite what the locals will make of such a stylish singer remains to be seen, but if enthusiasm is infectious, we will all catch something. See ya there!

Nadira Farid, singing this Friday

The Royal Standard Hotel:

Last week, Katerina Myskova and her Inverloch bound quartet (with Kip Dale sitting in for Doug Kuhn) aced a set and left a hotel heaving. Very satisfying.

This week, Frank has gone for the green beer for St Patrick’s Day, so no Captain Chaos. We will be back next week with Nadira Farid (Hobart) breezing in for an evening with the lads – meself, David Taylor (double Bass), Greg Appleton (drums) and the eponymous Captain.

The Royal Standard Hotel: Kateřina Myšková is back…

From Sydney, and singing this Friday at the Royal Standard Hotel.

Risa played to a pretty crowded joint last Friday – quite a few of her friends turned up, and a helluva lot of locals – the restaurant was full. Ponytail Pete survived the ordeal with flying colours, although starting with a difficult tune he had never heard before shows RK has lost none of her sense of humour…

This Friday, Kateřina Myšková will be previewing her set list for Inverloch Jazz Festival on the weekend. The queen of latin (and the landlord’s favourite singer) promises a lively coupla sets.

Sounding unusually rehearsed will be meself on keys, Tim McLaren (guitar), Kip Dale (bass), and Bill Swannie on drums.

The Royal Standard Hotel: Risa Khodani this week

And she had better be good, because Annie Smith rocked the joint last Friday. Greg Appleton and Dave Taylor made me sound good, and Captain Sensible had a ball…

So, the gorgeous Risa Khodani will be singing. Risa has a unique song list, drawn mainly from Japanese jazz standards of the 1950’s. Expect some slow ballads, obscure Japanese folk tunes maybe, and ridiculously fast stomps for good measure.

This week’s Captain Chaos Quartet sees Pete Micevski on bass, meself on piano, the Captain on sax and Michelle Morrison on drums.
