The Royal Standard Hotel: Kateřina Myšková is back…

From Sydney, and singing this Friday at the Royal Standard Hotel.

Risa played to a pretty crowded joint last Friday – quite a few of her friends turned up, and a helluva lot of locals – the restaurant was full. Ponytail Pete survived the ordeal with flying colours, although starting with a difficult tune he had never heard before shows RK has lost none of her sense of humour…

This Friday, Kateřina Myšková will be previewing her set list for Inverloch Jazz Festival on the weekend. The queen of latin (and the landlord’s favourite singer) promises a lively coupla sets.

Sounding unusually rehearsed will be meself on keys, Tim McLaren (guitar), Kip Dale (bass), and Bill Swannie on drums.

The Royal Standard Hotel: Katerina runs Hot, Annie Smith to come

Katerina’s second set was even better than the first – she called some horrendously difficult toons, and Chico and Kip swung all night. The Captain played smooth, and a goodly crowd turned up.

This week, Annie Smith is back in town – known for her stylish banter, and ability to reinterpret arrangements at the drop of a hat. Accompanied by Dave Taylor (double bass), Greg Appleton (drums) Captain Sensible (saxophone) and meself (confused, probably)

The Royal Standard Hotel

Last Friday, La Myskova served up a piping set, with a reasonable crowd in attendance and a fun night all round.

So good, in fact, that we are running the same band this week, only we have had to shoot Ben Stewart to make way for Chico (guitar).

The Royal Standard Friday sessions start next week

Rang Frank to see if he had changed his mind, but possibly due to memory lapse or something, he still wants us back. We are going to start on January 27th with Sevil Sabah, and then Joys Njambi, followed by Katerina Myskova. I put the late Miss Smith on the poster in the hope that she might ring me up and demand a date…

Friday Nights Live at the Royal Standard: and an invitation for 2017

Last week’s Annie Smith gig was a lot of fun if a little quieter – at one stage, every person in the bar was connected with the Jammers. And the food was pretty damn good…

Friday 16th December, Joys Njambi with the Captain Chaos Quartet

Joy’s last session before she sings at the Australian Jazz Convention in Ballarat. Promises to try out some Aretha Franklin and Etta James material along with a selection of jazz standards. Guitarist Ben Stewart will be the featured soloist.

This Friday

Friday 23rd December, Katerina Myskova with the Captain Chaos Quartet

And the year gets rounded out by Katerina – the pub is likely to be packed for this one, but we will squeeze you in. Or it will be almost empty, in which case we will shackle you to the bar…. The Chaos quartet will feature Chance Dorland on drums.

23rd December

An Invitation for 2017 Frank has already asked us back – so we will be contacting some more musicians in the near future – drop us a line at if you are interested.

Friday Night Live at the Royal Standard rolls on…

Last week started empty, and ended a happy riot. ‘Nuff said, great night.

This week, the stylish Katerina Myskova is back, with, maybe, some new songs in the repertoire, and some old hands (Ivan, The Captain, Bill Swannie, and meself) in the band.

If you haven’t heard La Myskova, it is time you did. A hot night is promised.

Actually this is also a rehearsal for a gig next Wednesday. Just kidding, it’s for a gig next Tuesday…

Katerina Myskova with the Captain Chaos Quartet, Royal Standard Hotel, 333 William Street, North Melbourne – from 7.30 – 9.30pm. Friday 4th November

What’s On: Friday Night Live at the Royal Standard

Annie Smith was so good that the Captain Chaos Quartet attracted another standing room only crowd – ably supported by Michael (drums), Ivan (bass), the Captain and meself. At the end of the night a lot of peeps came up to say how much they enjoyed it all (alcohol is a wonderful thing) followed by the landlord Frank cutting short the four week trial period.
