From Stan

Hello Jazz fans!

Is it too early to tell you about the February gigs I am involved in? Not if the first of them is on Tuesday, February 2nd. On that date, from 8pm, I will be playing with a band called “Breakout” at Dizzy’s Jazz Club. (We used to be called “Blowout” but we didn’t want to be confused with – or sued by – “Wilbur Wilde’s Blowout”.) “Breakout” comprises Colin Garett on saxophone, Robert Pettinato on drums, Peter Ryan on guitar and myself, Stan van Hooft on bass guitar. We play modern and contemporary jazz standards and original compositions. Dizzy’s Jazz Club is at 381 Burnley Street, Richmond. They have a very good kitchen and a dinner table can be booked at 9428 1233. Hope to see you there. Entry is $14 or $10 concession.

And then, on the weekend of February 12-14, “Standing Tall” – with a number of new members – will be playing two sets at the Grampians Jazz Festival in Hall’s Gap. Come and check us out if you are going to the festival.

Also at the festival, I will be playing with Mike Hirsh and Suzanne Andrews in a unit called “SMS plays Monk”. As the name indicates, we specialise in the compositions of Thelonious Monk, though we also embrace tunes by Lennon/McCartney and others.

If you are not going to the festival, you can hear the new “Standing Tall” line-up at our regular gig at the Open Studio on February 21 from 5 to 7pm. A good time is always had by our audiences at that venue (it’s at 204 High St, Northcote). Entry is by $5 donation.

And finally, “Breakout” will play is regular monthly gig at Farouk’s Olive, starting on Feb 27, (711 High St, Thornbury) from 5 to 7pm. There, too, the cover charge is a mere $5.

Looking forward to catching up with you at one or more of our gigs.
